Private Gdańsk City Tour – A Walk Through the Old Town of Gdansk
Last updated in September 2025.
The Private Gdańsk City Tour is the most popular shore excursion to Gdańsk. Our private walking tour takes place in the Old Town – the birthplace of many notable figures such as Gabriel Fahrenheit, the inventor of the mercury glass thermometer, and the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer. During our walk, we will explore the most iconic landmarks of this 1000-year-old city.
Most of the sites included in the tour lie along the Royal Way of Gdańsk (also known as the Royal Route). Its name comes from the fact that Polish kings visiting Gdańsk used this very route during their ceremonial entrances into the city.
We will begin our Gdańsk highlights tour at the Upland Gate, a 16th-century entrance to the Old Town.
On our way, we will see the Torture House and the Prison Tower, formerly home to the Amber Museum.
Next, we will enter Long Street and the Long Market, where we will admire Gdańsk’s most magnificent landmarks:
Artus Court – the medieval meeting hall of wealthy merchants
Neptune Fountain – the symbol of Gdańsk
The Green Gate
We will then step into one of the amber workshops to see a short demonstration of amber polishing – the famous “gold of the Baltic Sea” – and learn how to recognise real amber from imitations.
Although the official Royal Route ends here, we will continue to the Motława River waterfront to see the iconic medieval Crane. We will walk along the most picturesque street in Gdańsk – Mariacka Street – which will lead us to St. Mary’s Church, the largest brick Gothic church in the world. Inside, we will explore several fascinating works of medieval art.
We will finish the Gdańsk highlights tour at the richly decorated Great Armoury.
